Michel Gondry ist ein Spielkind. Du gibst ihm Legosteine und er dreht ein Musikvideo damit. Du schenkst ihm Eierkartons und er bastelt ein imaginäres Fernsehstudio. So wie in The Sceince Of Sleep. Konsequent steht hier auch ein kleiner Junge im Männerkörper im Mittelpunkt; Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal). Ein schüchterner Junge, der gerne Künstler wäre. Nach dem Tod des Vaters kehrt er zurück in die Wohnung seiner Mutter, schläft in seinem Kinderzimmer. Ein Raum voller Spielsachen mit einem Bett, das einer Wiege gleicht. Stephane verliebt sich in seine Nachbarin, die direkt Tür an Tür wohnt und natürlich Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg) heisst. In seiner Vorstellung ist Stephanie die ideale Partnerin! Auch sie spielt gerne, erschafft Dinge und da sie denselben Namen teilen, ist Liebe wohl die Konsequenz. Allerdings: Zwischen beiden existiert keinerlei Chemie, es funkt gar nicht. Ich finde auch keine reale Erklärung, weshalb sie die Richtige für ihn sein sollte. Stephan nimmt einen lausigen Job an und kreiert Kalender. Er arbeitet zusammen mit Guy (Alain Chabat), der im Grunde Stephanes kindliche Perspektive auf die Erwachsenenwelt personifiziert: Ein sexbessener Grobian - während Stephane ein unschuldiger Romantiker ist. Ist er? Oder entspricht das nur seiner Vorstellung von Romantik? Ist Stephanie denn mehr als er selbst in reiner Projektion? Immerhin spielt der ganze Film ausschliesslich in Stephanes Kopf! Immer wieder träumt er sich in ihr Bett - in Wahrheit aber teilen sie nie eine Matratze. Michel Gondry untermalt das mit atemberaubenden Sequenzen, in denen Spielzeug zum Leben erweckt wird. Ein Fluss animierter Miniaturen, fotografiert im Retro Stil (aus dem Polaroid Zeitalter). Alles wirkt wie ein endloser Video-Clip. Wäre es aber nicht konsequenter gewesen, ein echtes Kind zu besetzen? Nicht diesen nervig-launischen Baby-Erwachsenen? Ich würde Stephan als pathologischen Fall bezeichnen in seiner unfertigen Sexualität. Jedenfalls ist er bei weitem nicht so charmant, wie Gondry uns das weissmachen will. - Michel Gondry is a play child. You give him Lego bricks and he makes a music video with them. You give him egg cartons and he creates an imaginary television studio. Just like in The Sceince Of Sleep. Consistently, a little boy in a man's body is also the focus here; Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal). A shy boy who would like to be an artist. After his father's death he returns to his mother's apartment and sleeps in his nursery. A room full of toys with a bed that resembles a cradle. Stephane falls in love with his neighbour, who lives next door to him and of course is Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg). In his imagination Stephanie is the ideal partner! She also likes to play, creates things and because they share the same name, love is probably the consequence. However: There is no chemistry between the two, it doesn't work at all. Nor do I find any real explanation why she should be the right one for him. Stephan takes a lousy job and creates a calendar. He works together with Guy (Alain Chabat), who basically personifies Stephanes childlike perspective on the adult world: A sex-obsessed ruffian - while Stephane is an innocent romantic. Is he? Or is that just his idea of romance? Is Stephanie more than he is in pure projection? After all, the whole film is set exclusively in Stephanie's head! Again and again he dreams himself in her bed - but in reality they never share a mattress. Michel Gondry accompanies this with breathtaking sequences in which toys are brought to life. A flow of animated miniatures photographed in retro style (from the Polaroid age). Everything looks like an endless video clip. But wouldn't it have been more consistent to cast a real child? Not these annoying, moody baby adults? I would describe Stephan as a pathological case in his unfinished sexuality. Anyway, he is by far not as charming as Gondry wants us to know.
