Was ist Nouvelle Vague? - Let's try to imagine a time travel to France in the late 50s. Certainly the 50's were just as piefig in France as in Germany. Filmic too. It was the time of the Cs: Clement, Clair or Carne. They all had their time - but before and during the war. In the 50s they paralyzed the film business with beautifully made but not very exciting "quality films", as the Cahiers Du Cinema critics etched. Godard, Truffaut, Chabrol Rivette or Rohmer wrote Gazette for the legendary cinema and moved from the writer's gauntlet to that of the director. The "Auteurs", as they called it. The "Auteur", who is responsible for all the technical steps involved in making the film (note, not just writing a screenplay!). The role models came from Hollywood. John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock or Sam Fuller were declared authors without further ado. The enemy images were the faded directors from their own country. Rene Clement, in particular, attracted the wrath of the Cahiers Du Cinema and represented a frozen cinema that they wanted to overtake. What is Nouvelle Vague? You look for your own material and don't let yourself be dictated to by writers. The auteur chooses in such a way that he himself becomes recognizable in his work. His unmistakable handwriting! The film is shot outside on the street, without artificial light and with a rough narrative style. Pulp instead of "quality". Nouvelle Vague, the game with effects! We know a lot from the Italian new wave, neorealism. In the Filmkunstbar Fitzcarraldo, however, the works of the Nouvelle Vague lend themselves much better than those of neorealism or other new waves. Reason? Who doesn't like to see cool guys, beautiful women, chic cafes and all that still in Paris? In the early 60s, Godard was accused of making only love films without a political message. The Nouvelle Vague ends at the point where politicisation begins. Films like La Chinoise are another chapter. (We don't provide the films, only the links.)
