- Since the mid-80s, the Asian Arthaus cinema has had a firm place on the map. New "waves" were discovered in Taiwan or Thailand, the new diversity of Japanese cinema was enjoyed, the Korean boom became a respectable film industry based on the Japanese model, the struggle of Chinese independents against censorship was pursued and new masters emerged in Hong Kong. The Taiwanese "New Wave" brought directors such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang, who tell stories from their youth and also exercise cautious regime criticism. Their style brings Asian tradition together with a modern film language and thus basically stands for the entire film continent of Asia. At the same time during the 80's Hong Kong cinema was rediscovered. Not only the martial arts cinema was revolutionized by directors like Tsui Hark, but a kind of neorealistic "New Wave" developed, whose most brilliant representative is Wong Kar-wai. Hong Kong cinema changed our view of the world in the natural combination of commercial and auteur cinema. Japan is the Asian country with the longest film tradition. It drew its strength already in the classical phase of the 50's/60's from the confrontation with the history of the country. Today Japanese cinema has reinvented itself, Sono or Kitano, Miike or Tsukamoto are the postmodern cinema of Japan. Korean film has quickly moved to the forefront of festivals and audiences. A cinema of political attention in the 90s with director stars like Kim Ki-duk or Hong Sang-soo, just as fascinating as Japanese cinema. The peculiarity of Korean cinema is its stylistic sophistication combined with sometimes extreme cruelty and a range from author cinema to genre. Equally astonishing is Thai cinema, which developed out of nothing. China after the Cultural Revolution first produced the tales of the courted "fifth generation" with directors like Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou. They staged new, powerful films, but then went on to opulent operas. In contrast to this an independent cinema developed in the 90's which fights for its legalization but enjoys a worldwide reputation. For a long time there were only propaganda movies in Vietnam, at most interesting as a counterpart to the American Vietnam movies. Films like Cyclo, based on the Nouvelle Vague, show that the Asian formula of stylistic brilliance and violent excesses has also arrived in Vietnam. Cyclo inspired European cineasts and tightened censorship in his home country. In the Philippines, Brillante Mendoza's Kinatay provoked heated discussions and inspired enthusiasm at the Venice Film Festival. From that position he became the most successful director of his country. Raya Martin is influenced by Brecht, Lav Diaz Kino is monumental and pioneer Lino Brocka is one who destroys genres full of relish. Kinatay as a whole stands for the new Asian film, it shows the misery, stylistically confident, cleverly told and stirring in its impact.
