Ich habe die Apu Trilogie gesehen wie in einem Rausch. Es ist so, als ob vor meinen Augen eine ganz andere Welt entstünde. Ein Leben, das mir fremd ist. Während der 50er erschuf Satyajit Ray die drei Apu Filme, gewann alle grossen Festivals und erneuerte das indische Kino. Der indische Film, das war bis dahin Bollywood. Romantische Musicals. Ray war der Erste, der damit brach. Als Ray das Buch von Apu las, der in einem kleinen Dorf geboren wurde, in Kalkutta (damals noch Benares) ausgebildet wurde und auf die Wanderschaft ging, arbeitete er als relativ erfolgloser Künstler ohne nennenswerte Kontakte. In diesem dritten Teil ist Apu verheiratet. Er liebt seine junge Frau und ist glücklich. Doch seine Frau sowie Apus Mutter sterben plötzlich und es beginnt eine Zeit, in der er ziellos irrend trauert. Schliesslich aber nimmt Apu die Verantwortung für seinen Sohn an. Er wird Vater. Eine kurze Zusammenfassung, die kaum die Schönheit, das Geheimnisvolle dieser Filme widergeben kann. Apu folgt nicht den Konventionen des Genres "Biographie". Alle drei Schauspieler, die Apu während seiner Entwicklung darstellen, haben etwas Verträumtes. Er ist kein Zyniker, auch kein analytischer Denker. Apu ist ein naiver Idealist, der sich von vagen Gefühlen leiten lässt ohne einen festen Plan vom Leben. Apu steht für eine Gesellschaft, in der nicht das Ambitionierte, sondern das Philosophische im Vordergrund steht. Apu ist ganz Kind seines Vaters und während der vorangegangenen Episoden, steht der Vater für die Hoffnung, etwas möge geschehen. Etwas, das bedeutet in seinem Fall, eine neue Idee! Die Mutter dagegen sorgt sich um Geld und Nahrung für die Kinder. Einsamkeit und Trauer umgeben sie. Nachdem Vater und Sohn aufbrechen in die grosse Stadt, bleibt sie wartend zurück... Einsame Pfade durch den Wald, ein stiller Strom, die Wolken über dem Monsun. Die Apu Trilogie handelt von der Zeit an sich, von einer Kultur fern der unseren. Die Gefühle, die ausgedrückt werden, wirken exotisch und doch decken sie sich mit unseren eigenen. Hier können wir eine Verbindung zu Apu herstellen. Die Apu Trilogie, sie ist ein Gebet. The mother, on the other hand, cares about money and food for the children. Loneliness and grief surround her. After father and son leave for the big city, she remains waiting... Lonely paths through the forest, a quiet stream, the clouds above the monsoon. The Apu Trilogy is about time itself, about a culture far from ours.
