- There is no comedy form in Italy that works as a trademark. Mario Monicelli is the beginning of the Italian comedy in the 60s, but his Il soliti ignoti is rather a regional success and today hardly known outside Italy. The serial comedian Toto is also an Italian phenomenon. Commedia all´italiana with stars such as Vittorio Gassman, Ugo Tognazzi, Marcello Mastroianni, Claudia Cardinale and Monica Vitti is regarded as a somewhat pejorative stigma. Dino Risi has become popular as a master of Neapolitan comedy, but who in this country knows Il sorpasso? His Profumo di donna was later shot again with Al Pacino: Der Duft der Frauen (Scent of a Woman). Don Camillo likes our parents and serial comedians like Adriano Celentano are also not really great cinema. But Roberto Benigni is the greatest Italian comedian. Censored again and again by the 70s and 80s and even sentenced to one year in prison, Benigni is not only Italy's best comedian, but at times also the only political opposition. At Berlusconi's wedding it was only Benigni who received media attention as the voice of criticism. His La vita è bella (Life is beautiful) not only ranks among Italy's most successful films of all time, but also among the most successful non-Hollywood productions. The role of a father and husband who saves his son's life through fantasy in the German concentration camp corresponds to his own political courage. That the film works as a fairy tale for the whole family, a fairy tale in a concentration camp, is due to the role of the clown, Benigni himself, who is so brave and full of ideas that the world, no matter what it looks like, is always his own. Today Benigni is no longer imprisoned, but honoured with the Italian Order of Merit.
