- An ordinary fork of magical powers steers, flies through space and hits its target as a dangerous murder weapon. A bride floats over the roofs, a turkey in the sky... The mythology of the Gypsies, captivated by the exuberant lust of Emir Kusturica's images in Time of the gypsies. He was courted by Hollywood after his early Yugoslavian successes, but he always returned to where he felt at home, to Sarajevo (cf. Der Spiegel 35/91). (Kusturica's attitude towards what he considers his home should not be discussed here.) Black cat white tomcat is an outburst of gangster fantasies, a film that makes it crack and knows no boundaries. Kusturica is the godfather of the Gypsies; he transforms reality into slapstick, repeatedly throwing a stick between his figures' legs (cf. Der Spiegel 5/99). The longings of Gypsie culture as road movies heading east can be seen in Tony Gatlif's films. The French director tends to flatten and postcard romanticism, he illustrates the aphorisms of the Gypsies and mostly remains apolitical: Everything here is so beautifully colorful! Nevertheless, Gadjo Dilo (from the Gypsie trilogy Les princes, Latcho Drom and Gadjo Dilo) can be seen from a distance, only it's more about the development of a young Frenchman than about Gypsie culture. Gatlif strikes the right note for the search for meaning of young alternative people from southern Germany or other rich industrial countries to set out with Rastamähne to imitate the life of the jugglers.
