- A delightful film full of nostalgia and joy - filmed by Fellini at the height of his creative career! As you can read on Wikipedia, Fellini was born in Rimini and Amarcord is also playing there. But what you won't find on any Wikipedia are all the sweet memories and dreams of Fellini, transfigured by the imagination, transformed into little stories. They are the legends of a youth and of course they are bigger than life itself! And much more extravagant! At the centre is a boy from an Italian family that is so noisy that it makes him dizzy. There are the communal meals that always end in drama and his little pranks. The church tries to heal the sins, but the only redemption is promised by the variety show. If you have a nice big TV, press freeze and you get a Fellini still life. Images of perfect beauty! After all, the boy already knows what he wants from life: Lots of wine and lots of beautiful women! He wants to make films and one day become a Fellini! Amacord is one of the greatest Fellini films and is - like every Fellini film - autobiographical. Fellini films absorb it, his old life, his memories. Thanks to his imagination, we are allowed to relive them, even with a few ideas from Fellini's earlier films. All this together forms a work of art full of lust and dreams. One has to imagine Fellini as a fetishist of voluptuous women with a deep guilt complex. Out of all this comes his style, which is often called "Felliniesque". And certainly Fellini never gave a thought to consciously creating this style. With him, everything comes straight from his gut! Amarcord is a long sequence of dance numbers. You have to know that in Italy, films are always dubbed after. Therefore, we can enjoy "Italo Western" in Italian, English or even German. All original language, because dubbing is done anyway. Fellini's films are very musical, and I'm sure his actors were allowed to talk about the music in their texts. Amarcord plays during the Italian fascism. But the father of the family is a communist and therefore he plays the International in protest. In this world the fight rages. On one side the reactionary priest, on the other the communist local politician. This struggle goes on endlessly and one almost forgets that Italian fascism probably wasn't as much fun as in Amarcord. But sometimes thick fog covers the city and outside on the sea the insanely artificial ship Rex passes by. The residents then get into their boats and row towards Rex. Carried by waves that are just as artificial. In the Grand Hotel, on the other hand, none of the residents are allowed to set foot inside. It's far too expensive! That's where the fleshy Gradisca, which we know from other Fellini films (under a different name), makes a guest appearance. It is most beautiful when the snow falls. The snow is shovelled up to a kind of labyrinth and in it Gradisca and the residents have a snowball fight. But unfortunately she marries a greasy fascist. It's the end of her innocence and all hope. When Gradisca throws the bouquet, no one will catch it. Fellini loves these characters. Their hopes are his too. Everything in this world appears in a steady flow, these anecdotes have been told so often. Amarcord is a film that has certainly become exactly what Fellini wanted it to be. Later on, the film business changed. Today, a producer would certainly give "valuable" tips on what could be more entertaining or what would have to be simplified. Oh yes...
